American travelers can visit 122 countries around the world visa-free, while another 50 can be entered with a visa on arrival. Just 26 countries require you to obtain a visa in advance if you have an American passport.
However, most countries around the world limit the amount of time you can spend without a visa. As a tourist, you might be limited to 30 to 90 days in a country. In the case of Europe, Americans can only spend 90 days total in the Schengen Zone, which consists of 29 countries, out of every 180 days.
This makes it tricky to stay long-term without a visa in most countries. But there are a handful of countries that allow American visitors to stay for up to one year without needing a visa.
Why might you want to do this? You may be a digital nomad or remote worker looking for a home base abroad but not wanting to go through the red tape of applying for a digital nomad visa somewhere.
You may be thinking about moving abroad or retiring abroad and want to do a test run somewhere for six months to a year before you make a commitment and actually leave the US behind for good.
Or you may just want to explore one country or one region in-depth. Maybe you’re taking a career break or a sabbatical and you’ve always dreamed of spending time in one of these destinations.
Whatever the reason, these are the countries where Americans can stay the longest without a visa.
Note that this is not an exhaustive list — I’m highlighting the countries I think are the most desirable for American travelers, leaving out destinations that are prohibitively unsafe or ridiculously remote. I’m also not including countries that have a shorter stay that can be extended for additional time.
These are all countries where you’ll be automatically granted a stay of six months to one year.
Albania: 1 Year
Albania is an amazing European destination where you can stay long-term without needing a visa. In fact, Americans are able to stay in this beautiful Balkan country for up to one year visa-free.
Quickly growing in popularity as a tourist destination, Albania is home to gorgeous beaches along the Adriatic Sea, charming small towns, mountains and lakes, and a funky capital city, Tirana. One of the best things about Albania is how affordable it is. Your money goes much further here than elsewhere in Europe.
It’s also a good location for exploring the Balkans and the rest of Europe. You can easily travel by land to nearby countries like Greece, Montenegro, Croatia, North Macedonia, Kosovo, and Serbia. And other European destinations are just a short flight away. You can even get to Italy by ferry from Albania.
Georgia: 1 Year
The small country of Georgia is an attractive destination if you want to stay somewhere long-term without a visa. You can stay in Georgia for up to one year, and this includes the right to work and study in Georgia.
Georgia is part of the Caucasus and its located at the intersection of Europe and Asia. It’s ranked as the safest country in the region, and it’s a beautiful, underrated destination. The capital Tbilisi is a cool city, and the Georgian countryside is absolutely stunning, full of mountains, monasteries, and vineyards.
Tbilisi is well-connected with flights to Europe and the Middle East, making it a good place to base yourself. Much like Albania, Georgia is also an affordable destination that offers great value for money.
United Kingdom: 6 Months
Americans can spend up to six months in the UK without a visa, giving you access to England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland for half a year. One of the obvious perks of this is that the UK is English-speaking and a very developed country, making this an easy transition for many Americans.
The biggest drawback is the cost of living and traveling in the UK. However, when you go outside of London and other big cities, you might be surprised at the prices. Even with the exchange rate from US dollars to the British pound, I find prices in the UK to be cheaper overall than many parts of the US.
The UK is a beautiful country, and you could easily spend several months roadtripping from the Scottish Highlands in the north all the way down to England’s Jurassic Coast, stopping in countless charming towns and areas of natural beauty in between. This is something that I’d personally love to do one day!
Mexico: 6 Months
As the United States’ neighbor to the south, Mexico is a hugely popular destination for American travelers, expats, and retirees. Not only can you stay in Mexico for six months without a visa, it’s also fairly simple to get permanent residency in Mexico, which is why many Americans move here long-term.
Mexico is a huge and diverse country with something for everyone. It’s also much safer than the American news media would have you believe. Not to mention, it’s more affordable than the US.
If you want all the comforts of home, destinations like Playa del Carmen, Puerto Vallarta, and San Miguel de Allende are popular with American expats and retirees. For a more local experience, cities like Oaxaca and Guadalajara are great, while the capital Mexico City is a world-class metropolis.
Canada: 6 Months
Neighboring the US to the north, Canada also offers stays of up to six months for Americans. Much like the US and Mexico, Canada is a very large country with diverse beauty from coast to coast.
This is another “easy” country for Americans because of the lack of a language barrier (well, outside of Quebec where some people only speak French!) and the cultural similarities to the US.
Surprisingly, Canada can also be quite affordable. It’s not a “cheap” country by any means, but it is actually less expensive than the US, especially outside of big cities like Vancouver and Toronto.
Armenia: 6 Months
Going back to the Caucasus, Armenia is another country where Americans can stay long-term without needing a visa. To be precise, Americans can stay in Armenia for up to six months visa-free.
From a purely comparative standpoint, Georgia comes out on top over Armenia based on a variety of factors. You can stay in Georgia for longer (up to one year), it’s safer, and it’s more affordable.
But with all of that being said, Armenia is also a great destination with lots to offer. Like Georgia, the scenery in Armenia is stunning, with beautiful mountains and lots of ancient ruins and historic sites.
Panama: 6 Months
Panama is another country that allows American travelers to stay for up to six months. This Central American country is a great destination that has something to offer for everyone.
Tropical beaches? Check. Small highland towns? Check. Big city vibes? Check. Whether you spend your time in the laidback beachy town of Bocas del Toro, get back to nature in the small town of Boquete, or live it up in Panama City, this country has it all. Panama is also quite safe, and fairly affordable.
One thing I like about Panama is how well-connected Panama City is when it comes to flights. It’s a major flight hub with tons of direct flights all across the Americas and even to Europe.
Barbados: 6 Months
If you’re looking for a slice of Caribbean paradise, you can find it in Barbados. This beautiful Caribbean island offers Americans the chance to stay for up to half a year in the country without needing a visa.
Barbados is considered to be one of the safest Caribbean islands, although like with any country, there are some areas that you should avoid. Overall, it’s a beautiful and welcoming destination.
You can find beautiful beaches in Barbados, and it’s a popular destination for snorkeling. Barbados is also known for its delicious Caribbean cuisine and rum. It’s not a particularly cheap destination, although it’s also not the most expensive in the Caribbean. If you’re dreaming of island life, it might be perfect for you!
Costa Rica: 6 Months
Heading back over to Central America, Costa Rica is yet another country where Americans can stay for up to six months visa-free. Costa Rica is known for its amazing nature and biodiversity.
The Pacific Coast and Caribbean Coast both offer amazing beaches, while the interior of this country is filled with volcanoes, waterfalls, and rainforests. Costa Rica consistently ranks among the safest countries in Latin America, and it’s more developed because of its strong tourism infrastructure.
However, the drawback of Costa Rica is how pricy it can be. Although it’s still cheaper than the US, Costa Rica is by far the most expensive destination in Central America, with prices for everything much higher than neighboring Panama. This is especially true in the most popular tourist destinations.
Dominica: 6 Months
Finally, one more country on this list is Dominica. Dominica is a small island in the Caribbean that you can stay in for up to six months. This is where you go if you want to get away from it all.
Dominica is one of the smallest Caribbean countries with a population of under 75,000 people. It’s also one of the least touristy islands in the Caribbean. Very few cruise ships come to Dominica, and the island sees only around 75,000 overnight visitors per year. There are very few flights to Dominica.
But if you’re looking to discover a pristine Caribbean island with amazing beaches and a lush, mountainous interior, the underrated country of Dominica could be somewhere that appeals to you.
