Best Hostels in Quito
Are you looking for the best hostels in Quito, Ecuador?
Quito is a really cool city, and definitely one that you should not miss while traveling through Ecuador. It’s also an affordable city, with plenty of excellent accommodation options for budget travelers.
There are so many great things to do in Quito. Some of my favorites include:
- Visit the Basílica del Voto Nacional, a massive Neo-Gothic church where you can climb to the top of the towers for some truly incredible views over the city
- See the Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús, a church with an impressive all-gold interior
- Take a food and cultural walking tour to learn more about Quito
- Ride the Teleférico cable car up the Pichincha Volcano for amazing views of Quito from 13,000 feet
- Visit the beautiful Convento de San Francisco, a historic convent with a museum, gardens, and a tower that you can climb for more breathtaking city views
- Take a day trip to the cloud forest of Mindo for ziplining, waterfall hikes, and more
- Or take a day trip to the stunning Quilotoa Lagoon
- Be awed by Cotopaxi Volcano on a day trip from Quito
I recommend spending at least two full days in Quito, and longer if you want to take some day trips to nearby destinations like I did (don’t skip Mindo or Quilotoa Lagoon, they were major highlights!)
Where to Stay in Quito
Quito is a very large city, but getting around is simple and affordable. Ubers are no more than $2 to $5 to get across the city, while the public buses cost just $0.25. A brand-new subway system opened shortly after I left Quito, and from what I’ve heard, a ride on the subway is just $0.45 so that’s another option.
The most popular areas to stay in Quito are Centro Histórico, Mariscal, and La Floresta.
Centro Histórico is one of the best places to stay because it’s where the main tourist attractions in Quito are located. I stayed in Mariscal, which is known for its nightlife. It’s about two miles north of the historic center. La Floresta is adjacent to Mariscal, and it’s known for being a trendy and artistic neighborhood.
All of these neighborhoods are safe for tourists, although you should watch out for pickpockets (especially in Centro Histórico) and avoid walking around by yourself late at night in any neighborhood.
Personally, I wish I would have stayed in the Centro Histórico because I ended up enjoying that area the most, but all of Quito’s neighborhoods have something to offer depending on your interests.
Here are my top picks for where to stay in Quito, Ecuador:

The Secret Garden is one of the best hostels in Quito for budget travelers. Located in the San Blas neighborhood, this hostel is just a short walk away from the historic center of the city.
This hostel offers a mix of private rooms and dorm rooms. Guests can also relax in the garden, the shared lounge, and the rooftop terrace. The Secret Garden also has an affordable on-site restaurant.

Selina Quito
This is where I stayed in Quito, and I found it to be a nice hostel, but I would have preferred to be in the historic center of the city rather than Mariscal. However, if you’re interested in nightlife (Mariscal is known for it) and don’t mind being further away from the Centro Histórico, this is a good option.
I stayed in a private room, but Selina also offers dorm rooms with shared bathrooms. There are some nice amenities like a coworking space and a yoga studio that guests can take advantage of.

Community Hostel
Community Hostel is another popular hostel for budget travelers in Quito. While I did not stay here, I took a popular free walking tour that starts from here so I got to scope out the hostel for myself.
This place definitely has more basic facilities, but the real highlight is the rooftop terrace overlooking Quito. This is a great spot to relax and hang out, or join one of the community dinners that happens up here. You are also really close to the Centro Histórico, so all of the top attractions in Quito are nearby.
