Best Day Trips from Seville, Spain:
Cordoba
One of the easiest day trips from Seville is Cordoba. Located just 45 minutes from Seville by train, Cordoba was an important Roman city and there are still some remnants of this, like the city’s iconic Roman bridge. There was also a lot of Islamic influence in Cordoba in the Middle Ages. This can be seen in La Mezquita, a unique church that was once a mosque. La Mezquita is one of the most popular attractions in Cordoba.
Another thing not to miss in Cordoba? The city’s famous patios. Patios are inner courtyards of homes and buildings that are decorated beautifully with with elaborate tile mosaics, ceramics, and colored flowers. There’s an annual festival of the patios every May, but some are open to visitors year-round.
The easiest way to get to Cordoba is by train, and it takes about half the time that driving does. If you want to visit Cordoba as part of a tour, I’d recommend this full-day tour from Sevilla which includes time in Cordoba and tickets for La Mezquita, along with time in the charming small town of Carmona.
Ronda
Ronda is another great day trip from Seville. This city is famous for its whitewashed buildings and dramatic scenery perched on top of a cliff over a deep gorge. It’s possible to get to Ronda by train or bus from Seville, but the journey can take a while (2.5 to three hours depending on which option you choose.)
Driving is actually the better option for getting to Ronda, since it takes less than two hours, and having your own car gives you the flexibility to visit other Pueblos Blancos, or “white villages” nearby.
If you don’t want to deal with driving yourself, another option is taking a tour. This full-day tour from Seville visits Ronda as well as Zahara de la Sierra and Grazalema, two other charming Pueblos Blancos.
Cadiz
If you want to visit the beach from Seville, Cadiz is the closest option. But it’s not just a beach town. Cadiz is also a great cultural and historical destination. This port city was historically the home of the Spanish Navy, and it really boomed during the Age of Exploration. There’s a lot to explore in the old town of Cadiz.
There are also great beaches close to the city center if you want to enjoy some sunshine and ocean waves. Cadiz is just under 1.5 hours from Seville by train if you want to visit on your own.
You can also visit on a tour, like this day trip which combines a visit to Cadiz with the historic town of Jerez de la Frontera (although keep in mind this tour is not focused on time at the beach.)
Jerez de la Frontera
I just mentioned it, but Jerez de la Frontera is another excellent day trip destination from Seville. This historic city is home to an old Moorish fortress and its also well-known for its wine.
Jerez de la Frontera is a very easy day trip from Seville, being just a 45-minute train ride away. Or if you’d like to combine it with another destination, this day trip that also goes to Cadiz is a great choice.
Granada
Granada is further away than the other destinations on this list, but it’s still a worthwhile day trip from Seville. Granada is another historic Andalusian city famous for its Moorish influences.
The best example of Moorish architecture in Granada is the Alhambra, a spectacular palace that is by far the most popular tourist attraction in the city. You could easily spend half a day just at the Alhambra!
There are no direct trains from Seville to Granada (you’ll have to change in Cordoba) and the journey can take 2.5 to three hours. Driving also takes close to three hours. If you visit on a day trip, you’ll want to get an early start. Another option is this full-day tour which includes tickets to the Alhambra.
Carmona
Carmona is a charming town that makes for an easy day trip from Seville. This historic town has visible influences from multiple cultures throughout the ages, including Roman and Moorish influences.
It’s just a 35-minute drive or one-hour bus ride from Seville, making it great for a quicker day trip. Or you can combine Carmona with another destination for a longer trip. This full-day tour includes several hours in the city of Cordoba as well as a one-hour stop in Carmona to explore this smaller town.
Malaga
Another beach destination you can visit from Seville is Malaga. This port city is the largest along Spain’s Costa del Sol, which is a popular vacation destinations with its many beach towns along the Mediterranean Sea. If you only have one day, Malaga is the best destination to visit on the Costa del Sol.
This is because it’s accessible by train from Seville. The trains aren’t direct (you’ll have to change in Cordoba) but the journey takes just about two hours. There’s also a direct bus from Seville that takes two hours and 45 minutes, or you can drive yourself which takes about the same amount of time.
Malaga is a great city when it comes to history and culture, with attractions like the Alcazaba Moorish fortress, the Malaga Cathedral, and the Museo Picasso, which showcases artwork from the famous Malaga-born artist. There are also great beaches close to the city center in Malaga if you want to have a beach day.
Caminito del Rey
If you’re looking for an outdoor adventure, Caminito del Rey is one of the best day trips from Seville. Caminito del Rey is a hiking trail consisting of walkways along a narrow gorge. It’s a unique destination with spectacular scenery, making it a great choice for a memorable day trip from Seville.
The hiking trail is about 4.5 miles long and takes a couple of hours to complete. It’s not considered to be challenging, so people of all fitness levels can enjoy this stunning walk.
Caminito del Rey is not accessible by public transportation from Seville, so this is one you’ll want to have a car for. It’s about two hours and 15 minutes from Seville by car. If you don’t want to drive yourself, you can also book a tour. This full-day excursion from Seville includes a guided hike along Caminito del Rey, as well as a stop in the nearby town of Osuna where you’ll enjoy a tour and some free time.
Gibraltar
Finally, Gibraltar is a really cool day trip you can take from Seville. Gibraltar is a tiny British Overseas Territory that is located on a small peninsula in southern Spain, and just north of Morocco.
Although it’s geographically part of Spain, it’s politically part of the United Kingdom. Gibraltar is known for its scenery, including the striking Rock of Gibraltar, and its wild monkey population. It’s also known for being a cheap duty-free shopping destination, which is why many tourists come here.
This is another place where you’ll want to drive yourself (2.5-hour drive from Seville) or take a tour because public transportation is not an option here. If you’re looking for a good tour from Seville, this is a great choice. It includes free time in Gibraltar as well as entrance to the stunning Saint Michael’s Cave.
