Best Hotels in Cesis
Are you looking for the best hotels in Cesis, Latvia?
Cesis is a quaint small town in Latvia about 1.5 hours away from the capital of Riga. This was an important town in medieval times, and you can still visit the well-preserved medieval ruins of Cesis Castle.
Today, Cesis is a popular tourist destination because of its quaint small-town charm and location within Gauja National Park. There are tons of great places for hiking and walking close to the town.
There are also lots of cafes, restaurants, and shops in Cesis. Cesis is a pretty popular destination for Latvians, but like most of Latvia outside of Riga, it still doesn’t receive many foreign tourists. Visiting Cesis is a great way to see more of Latvia and really get a feel for this country outside the capital city.
The town of Sigulda, which also has a historic castle, and the town of Ligatne, which was built around a paper mill but has grown into a cute little community, are within easy driving distance of Cesis.
Is Cesis, Latvia worth visiting? I definitely think Cesis is worth a visit! While you can theoretically visit on a day trip from the capital Riga, I think it’s worth spending a night or two in Cesis to explore the surrounding area. There’s a lot you can do in the national park as well as exploring nearby towns.
Getting to Cesis: While you can take the train to Cesis from Riga in just 1.5 hours, I actually recommend getting a rental car instead. It’s just under 1.5 hours by car from Riga, and having your own vehicle will give you a lot more flexibility in exploring Cesis and the surrounding areas where public transit is limited.
Where to Stay in Cesis
Cesis is a small town with a population of just 16,000 people, so there aren’t tons of choices when it comes to where to stay, but there are enough options that will suit travelers of every taste and budget.
On my trip to Cesis, I was hosted at Villa Santa, a beautiful hotel just five minutes outside of town located in a peaceful forest on the banks of the Gauja River. This is a great place to stay if you want to be in the midst of nature and still have easy access to the town (although you’ll definitely need a car here.)
My room was super comfortable, and the included breakfast in the morning was delicious. I also had the opportunity to eat dinner at the hotel restaurant on the terrace, which was amazing!
The only issue I had staying here was WiFi. There’s no cell service at this hotel since it’s in a forest, and the WiFi did not extend well to my room, although it worked very well in other parts of the hotel. The only time I could use it in my room was if I stood right in front of my door. That’s the only hesitation I’d have about recommending this place, but other than that, Villa Santa is a great place to stay in Cesis.
