Best Hotels in Montmartre, Paris
Are you looking for the best hotels in Montmartre, Paris?
Montmartre is one of the most charming neighborhoods in Paris. Located in the hilly 18th arrondissement in the northern part of the city, Montmartre has long been an enclave for artists and bohemians.
Although it’s definitely more touristy today, the neighborhood still retains that artistic feel. And once you get away from the popular tourist streets of Montmartre, it also has more of a local atmosphere.
Here are some of the top things to do in Montmartre:
- Visit the iconic Sacré-Cœur Basilica and take in sweeping views of Paris
- See artists at work in charming Place du Tertre
- Catch a cabaret performance at the famous Moulin Rouge
- Stroll along Rue de L’Abreuvoir, often said to be the prettiest street in Paris
- Take a guided Montmartre food and wine tour
- Visit the Musée de Montmartre to learn about the neighborhood’s history
- Take a spin on the carousel located at the bottom of the Sacré-Cœur steps
- Have a picnic in the Square de la Turlure behind Sacré-Cœur
- Discover the hidden corners of Montmartre on a guided walking tour
Montmartre is also full of cute restaurants, cafes, and bars.
La Maison Rose and Le Consulat are two highly photogenic restaurants in Montmartre, but I personally recommend Fric Frac, which has the best grilled cheese sandwiches in the world!
And now let’s get into the best places to stay in Montmartre.
Where to Stay in Montmartre
Is Montmartre a good area to stay in Paris? Yes, Montmartre is a great neighborhood to stay in, but there are a few important things you should know before you book a hotel in Montmartre.
First of all, Montmartre is not the most centrally located neighborhood in Paris. It’s in the northern part of the city, so you will most likely need to take the Metro to get around. That said, it’s still one of the neighborhoods I recommend to first-time visitors in Paris despite being slightly out of the way.
Another thing to know is that Montmartre is very hilly! There are lots of stairs in the neighborhood — at the Abbesses Metro station, you can find yourself climbing up 175 stairs to the exit if you don’t know what you’re getting yourself into. Montmartre is not a good neighborhood if you have mobility issues.
Finally, Montmartre is located in the 18th arrondissement. While Montmartre itself is very safe, there are some parts of the 18th (mainly further north and east) that can be a little sketchy.
That being said, if you’re aware of all this, Montmartre can be a great place to stay in Paris. One of the biggest benefits is that hotels in Montmartre are usually less expensive than elsewhere in Paris.
But you’re not sacrificing a bit of Parisian charm for the lower prices — Montmartre is by far one of the most romantic and beautiful neighborhoods in Paris, which is why I recommend it.
