Best Hotels in Salzburg, Austria
Are you looking for the best hotels in Salzburg, Austria?
Read on for my top picks!
Salzburg is a beautiful city in western Austria, very close to the border with Germany. It looks like something straight out of a fairytale, and is famous for being the setting of The Sound of Music as well as being the birthplace of Mozart. It’s also known for its fantastic Christmas markets during the winter.
I visited Salzburg in late November and was quickly enchanted by this city.
Here are the top things to do in Salzburg:
- Explore Hohensalzburg Fortress, which overlooks the city
- Enjoy a Mozart concert inside Mirabell Palace (where Mozart actually performed!)
- Visit Mozart’s birthplace and childhood home
- See the historic St. Peter’s Abbey and Cemetery
- Take a day trip to the charming village of Hallstatt
- Visit Hellbrunn Palace just outside the city
- Go on a tour exploring the filming locations of The Sound of Music
How many days do you need in Salzburg? I recommend spending at least two full days in Salzburg and then dedicating one day to an excursion outside the city (Hallstatt would be my top pick!)
What is the best time of year to visit Salzburg? Salzburg is a fantastic year-round destination. Late spring and fall are good for enjoying lower crowds. Summer is the most popular time to visit. Late November is a great time to visit for the beginning of the Christmas markets, and things get significantly more crowded in December. I’d avoid visiting from January through March since it gets extremely cold.
Now let’s get into the best hotels in Salzburg!
Where to Stay in Salzburg
What is the best tourist area to stay in Salzburg? I highly recommend staying in the Old Town (Altstadt) or as close as you can get to it. This is the most beautiful part of Salzburg where you’ll find the most tourist attractions. I definitely would not stay further than a 15-minute walk from the Old Town.
I stayed at the Sheraton Grand Salzburg, which I would highly recommend. Although this hotel is not in the Old Town, it’s a 15-minute walk from it. My room overlooked the Mirabell Palace Gardens, so it was really scenic. It was an extremely festive place to stay during the beginning of the Christmas season, and the Mirabell Palace Christmas market was just a few minutes away so I ended up stopping there a lot!
This hotel is also convenient, being less than a 15-minute walk from the train station.
Here are my top three picks for where to stay in Salzburg, Austria:
- Best luxury: Hotel Goldener Hirsch
- Best mid-range: Cocoon Salzburg
- Best budget: Stadtalm Naturfreundehaus
