Where to Stay in Grasmere, England
Are you wondering where to stay in Grasmere, England?
Grasmere is one of the most picturesque villages in the Lake District. The Lake District, located in Cumbria in northwestern England, is an idyllic region that is named for the area’s 16 lakes. Grasmere, in addition to being the name of a village, is also the name of one of the smallest lakes in the region.
Why is Grasmere famous? Although it’s small in size, Grasmere has a lot to offer. It was the home of the famous poet William Wordsworth, who described it as “the loveliest spot that man hath ever found.”
Many visitors today are drawn to Grasmere due to the Wordsworth connection, and you can even visit Dove Cottage, his home for many years, along with the Wordsworth Museum.
Another claim to fame for this small town is Grasmere gingerbread. Victorian cook Sarah Nelson invented it in 1854, and the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop has been drawing hungry visitors ever since.
Like all towns in the Lake District, Grasmere attracts many walkers and hikers. One of my favorite beginner hikes, Helm Crag, starts in Grasmere and offers stunning views of the lake and surrounding countryside.
Where is the best area to stay in Lake District? Grasmere is a great place to stay on a trip to the Lake District. It’s centrally located so you can easily drive to other spots in the region on day trips.
Best Places to Stay in Grasmere
Although I did not personally stay in Grasmere when I visited the Lake District, this is definitely where I would stay in the future. As I mentioned, it’s located in the center of the region so it makes a great base. It’s also quieter than some of the larger towns like Ambleside, Windermere, and Keswick.
You can easily walk to the lake and the village’s restaurants and shops from all of the following accommodations, and there are also plenty of scenic walks and hikes just outside your front door.
Here are my top picks for where to stay in Grasmere:
- Best luxury hotel and spa: The Daffodil Hotel & Spa
- Best boutique hotel: Moss Grove Organic
- Best bed & breakfast: Heidi’s Grasmere Lodge
