Where to Stay in Strasbourg for Christmas Markets (Best Hotels!)
Are you trying to decide where to stay in Strasbourg for Christmas market access? Read on to discover my top picks for the best hotels in Strasbourg near the Christmas markets for a festive holiday trip!
Strasbourg is the capital of Alsace, a region in France that is right along the border with Germany. Because of its location, and because the area has actually changed hands between the French and the Germans several times over the centuries, Strasbourg (and all of Alsace) has a unique blend of both cultures.
The oldest part of Strasbourg is the Grande Ile, an island encircled by the Ill River. This is Strasbourg’s Old Town, where you’ll find many pedestrianized cobblestone streets, historic half-timbered houses, beautiful old churches, and, during the month of December, eight different Christmas markets!
This guide will show you exactly where to stay in Strasbourg at Christmastime.
Visiting Strasbourg at Christmas
Should you base yourself in Strasbourg for a Christmas trip? Yes, absolutely! I’ve also written about staying in Colmar, a smaller Alsatian city to the south of Strasbourg that is also very popular at Christmas, but I think there are certain reasons that you might choose to base yourself in Strasbourg instead.
For one thing, Strasbourg is just one hour and 45 minutes from Paris by train. So if you’re coming from Paris first, this makes Strasbourg an easy landing place for the next part of your trip.
Strasbourg is also a larger city than Colmar — in fact, it’s the biggest city and capital of the Alsace region. This means there’s more to do here when it comes to museums and other tourist attractions. So if you want to explore beyond the Christmas markets, you might prefer Strasbourg over Colmar.
Being a larger city, Strasbourg also has more hotels, including options at a range of price points.
Finally, you can still get to Colmar in just 30 minutes by train from Strasbourg, making it an easy day trip. You can also easily take day trips to other festive cities like Basel, Switzerland and Heidelberg, Germany.
Best Hotels in Strasbourg, France
When it comes to where to stay in Strasbourg for visiting the Christmas markets, I highly recommend staying on the Grande Ile or close to it. This way, you can simply walk to all the Christmas markets.
A good area to stay if you don’t stay within the Grande Ile is near the Strasbourg train station. The train station is just a ten-minute walk from Petite France (one of the oldest and prettiest areas on the Grande Ile) and the Christmas markets. This makes it a super convenient place to stay in Strasbourg.
It’s also ideal for arriving and leaving by train, or for taking day trips to other cities.
Since Strasbourg is a large city, there are a variety of accommodations here. If you’re looking for a quaint hotel with Alsatian charm, you can find it. But you can also find hotels with a modern, sleek design too.
When to book your hotel: If you’re planning a trip to Strasbourg in December to visit the Christmas markets, it’s important to book your hotel as far in advance as you can! Prices go up the closer it gets to Christmas, and some hotels in Strasbourg sell out entirely on popular dates, like weekends in December.
