Best Hotels in Montevideo, Uruguay
Are you looking for the best hotels in Montevideo, Uruguay?
Uruguay’s capital city is an underrated destination in South America. In fact, Uruguay as a whole gets passed over by many travelers who favor the more popular destinations in South America.
I visited Montevideo on a weekend trip from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Uruguay is just across the Río Plata from Argentina, making it an easy trip by ferry. You can take a one hour and 15-minute ferry from Buenos Aires to the small and charming town of Colonia, Uruguay (this is what I did) and then take a three-hour bus to Montevideo, or you can take a two hour and 45-minute direct ferry from Buenos Aires to Montevideo (this is more expensive and you’ll miss the lovely town of Colonia.)
However you get to Montevideo, it’s worth spending two days in the city to see the highlights.
Montevideo is a pretty big city, but it doesn’t really feel like it. It has a population of 1.4 million, but I found the city to have a very laidback vibe. Uruguay is also the safest and wealthiest country in South America, which makes exploring the capital city a more relaxed affair than other South American capitals.
Where to Stay in Montevideo
Here are some of the best neighborhoods for tourists in Montevideo:
- Ciudad Vieja: This is the oldest neighborhood in the city dating back to colonial times. If you want to stay in a scenic, historic area, this is it. It’s also close to the ferry terminal.
- Punta Carretas: A nice neighborhood in the southern part of the city close to beaches and known for having the best sunsets in the city. A little outside the city center though.
- Centro: The most central area of the city, as the name suggests. This is a great place to stay in Montevideo if you want to have easy access to all of the neighborhoods listed below.
- Pocitos: Another nice neighborhood that is located a bit further outside the city center, but close to beaches. (Fortunately, Uber is affordable in Montevideo for getting around.)
