Best Hotels in Copan Ruinas
Are you looking for the best hotels in Copan Ruinas?
Copan Ruinas is a town in Honduras that is famous for its ancient Mayan ruins. The large archaeological site contains some of the best ruins in Central America, making it a popular tourist attraction.
Visiting the ruins in Copan is worth it. Honduras is one of the least-visited countries in Central America, but it has a lot to offer, especially the town of Copan Ruinas. I spent a week here and loved it!
Things to Do in Copan Ruinas
Aside from spending a day visiting the ruins, there are plenty of other things to do in Copan Ruinas.
Some of the best things to do while in town include:
- Visit Macaw Mountain, a beautiful and ethical bird sanctuary
- Try local tea and chocolate at Lugar de Té y Chocolate (don’t miss the chocolate frio drink, which is like a frozen hot chocolate!)
- Go on a horseback riding tour in the surrounding countryside
- In the summer, visit Paseo de los Girasoles, a beautiful sunflower field a few miles outside of town (you can get there on horseback or by tuk-tuk)
- Visit the butterfly garden at the Mayan Hills Hotel
- Spend a few weeks taking Spanish classes and doing a local homestay
While Honduras has a bad reputation for being a “dangerous” country, Copan Ruinas is one of the safest destinations you can visit in Honduras. I didn’t have any safety concerns there as a solo female traveler.
In order to reach Copan Ruinas, you have a few options.
The closest international airport is in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. This is where you’ll transit through if you’re coming from abroad or coming from the Bay Islands in Honduras. From the San Pedro Sula bus terminal, you can take a bus. Hedman Alas is the “luxury” bus ($22 USD) that is more comfortable and takes around four hours, while Casasola Express is the cheaper bus ($6 USD) that takes around six hours.
Copan is also extremely close to the border with Guatemala. If you are traveling in Guatemala, you can take a tourist shuttle from Antigua to Copan ($30 USD) which takes around seven hours.
Where to Stay in Copan Ruinas
Copan is a great place to spend anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.
You should plan to spend at least three days in Copan in order to see the highlights of the town, although you can certainly stay for longer if you want to study Spanish or volunteer locally.
Since Copan is a very tourist-centric town, there are lots of accommodation options.
You’ll find everything from boutique luxury hotels to comfortable mid-range B&Bs to budget-friendly hostels. Basically, there is something for everyone in Copan Ruinas.
The town is quite small and walkable, so all of these accommodation options are centrally located. It’s easy to get around Copan on foot. For example, the ruins are about a 15-minute walk from town on a well-maintained path. You can also hire a tuk-tuk for $1-2 USD to get to most places around town.
