Newport is one of the original seaside resort towns in the Northeastern United States. It was always an important shipping port, but the town also became a summertime playground for the rich and famous beginning during the Gilded Age of the late 19th century, when many flashy summer estates were built.
Some of these include The Breakers, Marble House, Rosecliff, and The Elms. You can visit many of these historic estates today with tickets through the Newport Mansions Preservation Society.
Another thing Newport is well-known for is sailing. This summer pastime is hugely popular in Newport.
You also can’t miss the Cliff Walk in Newport. This scenic walking path wraps around the coast of Newport, passing many historic homes and offering stunning coastal views over 3.5 miles.
