Best Hotels in Ghent, Belgium
Are you looking for the best hotels in Ghent, Belgium? Read on for my top picks!
Ghent is a great city in Belgium, just 30 minutes from Brussels by train. It sometimes gets overlooked by visitors who visit nearby Bruges instead (which is 25 minutes from Ghent by train), but you really should make time to visit Ghent! It’s also a great place to base yourself on a trip to Belgium.
This beautiful city is actually the third largest in Belgium after Brussels and Antwerp, but with just over 250,000 people living there, it doesn’t have the hustle and bustle of a big city at all. It’s home to one of the largest universities in Belgium, so the city has a lively, youthful feeling to it.
It’s a convenient place to stay if you want to explore the country via day trips, and there’s also plenty to do in Ghent itself. It has an extremely lovely historic center, complete with canals and a castle.
While I did not stay in Ghent on my most recent trip to Belgium, basing myself in Brussels instead, I did visit for a day and was thoroughly charmed by this city. It felt like the perfect place to stay if you want to be somewhere smaller than Brussels, but still in a convenient location with lots to do all around.
Where to Stay in Ghent
I highly recommend staying in the historic center of Ghent. The train station in Ghent is located on the outskirts of the city, and it’s about a 20-minute tram ride to get into the historic center.
This is the most picturesque part of the city, and where you’ll find all the main tourist attractions, as well as restaurants and shops. Many hotels in the historic center have great views and unique details.
Here are my top picks for where to stay in Ghent, Belgium:
- Best overall: Ghent Marriott Hotel
- Best boutique luxury: 1898 The Post
- Best on a budget: ibis Gent Centrum St. Baafs Kathedraal

Ghent Marriott Hotel
The best place to stay in the city is the Ghent Marriott Hotel. This hotel is very unique in that the facade occupies a historic building dating back to the 16th century, but you step through and find yourself in a huge, airy lobby with many more rooms. The location is great, right in the heart of the historic center.
Rooms in the older section of the hotel overlook the Korenlei, the main canal in Ghent. Rooms in the modern section have city views. Both sections have bright, modern, luxurious rooms. The location of this hotel is unbeatable, making it the perfect base for exploring all that Ghent has to offer.
1898 The Post
1898 The Post is another one of the best hotels in Ghent. Once the post office of Ghent, this historic building has been converted into a stunning boutique hotel. This is another place with an excellent location for visitors, situated right on the Korenlei and steps away from everything in the historic center.
Many of the rooms at this hotel feature great city views and unique period details, retaining the historic charm while still providing all the modern amenities you’d expect from a luxury hotel.
NH Collection Gent
NH Collection Gent is the ideal place to stay if you are looking for a comfortable, modern hotel that offers good value for money and a top-notch location. This hotel is right by Ghent’s historic town hall, and steps away from one of the city’s main squares, where you’ll find the iconic Belfry of Ghent.
Not only is this the perfect central location to stay in, but many of the rooms also offer fantastic city views. Amenities at this hotel that guests can enjoy include a small fitness center and a sauna.
Hotel Harmony
Hotel Harmony is a cozy, family-run hotel in Ghent, right along one of the canals and just a couple of minutes from Gravensteen, the city’s medieval castle. The historic center is also right at your doorstep.
This hotel offers good value for your money, and the rooms are comfortable and well-appointed. Some have views of the canal. Interestingly, this hotel has a rooftop outdoor swimming pool! This is definitely not common in Ghent, and could be a nice perk if you are visiting the city during the summer.
ibis Gent Centrum St. Baafs Kathedraal
For travelers on a budget, ibis Gent Centrum St. Baafs Kathedraal is the best place to stay in the city. This affordable hotel is located in the historic center, steps away from St. Bravo’s Cathedral.
Not only does the hotel offer good value for money, but it’s in an unbeatable location for exploring the city. The rooms at this hotel are simple but modern and comfortable, making it the perfect base in Ghent.
B&B HOTEL Gent Centrum
Another one of the best budget-friendly hotels in Ghent is B&B HOTEL Gent Centrum. This cozy hotel is located just a couple of minutes from the historic center, making it easy to explore all of Ghent.
The rooms at this hotel are airy, bright, and modern, and many offer nice views of the city. If you don’t want to spend too much money on a hotel in Ghent, this hotel provides excellent value.
Hotel Gravensteen
Finally, one of the best places to stay in Ghent is Hotel Gravensteen. This hotel is located right across the street from Gravensteen, also known as the Castle of the Counts. I was really impressed by this medieval castle in Ghent, so this would be a cool place to stay that’s convenient to all the action.
The hotel itself is located in a historic building that has been renovated with all the modern elements you’d expect. Some of the rooms here have views directly overlooking the Castle of the Counts.
