Best Hotels in Ollantaytambo, Peru
Are you looking for the best hotels in Ollantaytambo, Peru?
Ollantaytambo is a historic town in Peru’s Sacred Valley. It’s known for its incredibly well-preserved Incan streets and buildings, as well as the impressive Incan ruins surrounding the town.
Wandering through the ancient stone streets of the town (which date back to the 1400s) is like stepping back in time. The Ollantaytambo ruins are also among the most impressive in the Sacred Valley.
Ollantaytambo is a great place to spend a night or two before visiting Machu Picchu.
If you are completing the Inca Trail trek, your trekking group may spend a night in Ollantaytambo before proceeding to Kilometer 82, the starting point of the trek, the next morning.
If you are planning to visit Machu Picchu without trekking, Ollantaytambo is home to a train station that will take you on a scenic two-hour train journey to Aguas Calientes, the small town just outside Machu Picchu where you will then be able to catch a short bus to visit the ruins.
Here are the best hotels near Machu Picchu in Aguas Calientes.
Either way, don’t miss Ollantaytambo! It’s worth spending at least one night and one day in this town before continuing on your journey to visit Machu Picchu. Ollantaytambo ended up being one of my favorite places in the Sacred Valley, and I wish I could have spent more than one night here.
Where to Stay in Ollantaytambo, Peru
Ollantaytambo is a very small town. Some hotels are located within the historic center of the city, while others are located a ten- to fifteen-minute walk down the road slightly outside of town.
Since it’s such a small place, it doesn’t matter too much whether you choose a hotel that is right in town or slightly outside of it. Everything is within easy walking distance, including the town with its restaurants and souvenir shops, the train station, and the Incan archaeological sites around town.
Some hotels also offer shuttles to the train station if you have a lot of luggage.

Tunupa Lodge Hotel
Tunupa Lodge is where I stayed for one night in Ollantaytambo, and while I found it to be okay, it’s not a hotel I would be rushing back to. This hotel is located about a ten-minute walk from town and it’s very convenient to the train station. The highlight of the hotel was the alpacas roaming around the garden.
But in terms of value, I think you could find a cheaper place to stay that’s just as nice, or splurge for something a lot better. Overall, this is a solid option but not my favorite place I stayed in Peru.
