Best Luxury Hotels in Amsterdam
Are you looking for the best luxury hotels in Amsterdam?
Amsterdam is one of the most unique cities in the world, as it’s built around 165 canals! Unlike Venice, another destination famous for its canals, Amsterdam is not a pedestrian-only city. This means that you’ll still have to contend with cars, but even more than that, you’ll have to watch out for bicycles!
Even though it only has a population of 820,000, it’s estimated that there are more than 880,000 bicycles in the city! Bicycles are an icon of the city, along with Amsterdam’s many picturesque canals.
Here are some of the top things you must do while in Amsterdam:
- Visit the world-renowned Rijksmuseum and its impressive collection of Dutch art
- Enjoy even more art at the Van Gogh Museum and learn about the painter’s life and works
- See Amsterdam from the water on a scenic canal cruise
- Visit the Anne Frank House and learn more about this Jewish family’s struggle during WWII (be sure to book your tickets online six weeks in advance, because it always sells out!)
- Try delicious Dutch food like stroopwafels and cheese
- Stroll through Amsterdam’s infamous Red Light District
- Take a day trip to some quaint small towns in the countryside of the Netherlands
How many days do you need in Amsterdam? I recommend spending two full days in Amsterdam, and one extra day if you’d like to do a day trip outside the city. This is enough time to see the highlights.
Where to Stay in Amsterdam
I’ve now been to Amsterdam twice (once in late summer and once in the winter right before Christmas), and I’ve stayed in two different areas on opposite sides of the central part of the city.
On my first trip, I stayed near Centraal Station. This is a great area to stay in if you want to be close to the train station or Amsterdam’s cruise port. You’re also close to the most lively, tourist part of Amsterdam.
On my second trip, I stayed in the Leidseplein area. This was closer to the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum and near some pretty, quieter canals. I personally preferred this area.
Either of these locations is a good option for first-time visitors, as well as the whole area in between them (known as Centrum, or the most central part of Amsterdam.) In particular, the neighborhoods of Jordaan and the Herengracht are where you’ll find some of the city’s best luxury hotels.
Here are my top picks for where to stay in Amsterdam, Netherlands:
- Best for over-the-top luxury: Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam
- Best boutique luxury: Hotel TwentySeven
- Best for luxury on a budget: Amsterdam Marriott Hotel

Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam
If you want to splurge on a luxurious hotel during your time in Amsterdam, you can’t go wrong with the Waldorf Astoria. This five-star hotel is known for being the pinnacle of luxury in Amsterdam.
Located on the prestigious Herengracht canal, the hotel is made up of six palatial 17th-century canal houses. Guests at this hotel will enjoy luxurious and tasteful rooms, many with privileged canal views. Guests also have access to a private garden, an indoor swimming pool, a sauna, a fitness center, and a spa.

The Dylan Amsterdam
The Dylan is a great luxury hotel in a wonderful neighborhood of Amsterdam. This five-star boutique hotel is just a short walk away from Dam Square and the high-end Nine Streets shopping district.
Located along the picturesque Keizersgracht canal, some of the rooms at The Dylan have views overlooking the canal, while others face the quiet, peaceful garden. There’s also a fitness center at the hotel.

Staying at this hotel puts you in close proximity to popular sites in Amsterdam like the Anne Frank House and Dam Square. The hotel has amenities including a fitness center and a relaxing private garden.
Amsterdam Marriott Hotel
The Amsterdam Marriott Hotel is where I stayed on my most recent trip to Amsterdam, and I would recommend it if you are looking for a luxury hotel at a more affordable price. While this hotel might be lacking the wow factor of some of the others on this list, it’s a great base for exploring Amsterdam.
You’re just a short walk away from the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Vondelpark. You’re also within easy walking distance (or a short tram ride) from other top sights and attractions.
InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam
The InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam is another one of the best luxury hotels in the city. This five-star hotel is a little further from the center of Amsterdam, but it’s in a calm, beautiful neighborhood.
This expansive hotel is located on the banks of the Amstel River, and it’s a leisurely walk or tram ride to many of the city’s top attractions. The hotel offers an indoor pool and a fitness center.
Tivoli Doelen Amsterdam Hotel
Tivoli Doelen Amsterdam Hotel is an excellent luxury hotel located in the heart of Amsterdam. If you want to be centrally located and close to all the action, this is the perfect place to stay.
The historic building dates back to the 17th century, making it the oldest hotel in the city, but the Tivoli Doelen Amsterdam Hotel has been tastefully updated with all the modern luxuries you would expect.
Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky Amsterdam
Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky Amsterdam is another centrally located luxury hotel just off Dam Square in the heart of Amsterdam. The hotel is located in a historic 19th-century building.

Kimpton De Witt Amsterdam
Kimpton De Witt Amsterdam is another option if you are looking for a five-star luxury hotel that is well-positioned in the center of the city. This hotel is located close to everything in Amsterdam.
You’re also less than five minutes from Centraal Station, making this a convenient place to stay if you’ll be arriving or leaving the city by train. While the rooms at this hotel are very modern and luxurious, some of them retain unique and charming historic Dutch elements, like beamed ceilings.
Hyatt Regency Amsterdam
Hyatt Regency Amsterdam is a great place to stay if you want to be a little further outside the city center and experience a more affordable luxury hotel. This five-star hotel is located in a quieter, residential neighborhood but is within walking distance (or a short tram ride) from top sights and attractions.
The hotel has bright and airy guest rooms with more spacious rooms than you would typically find in the center of Amsterdam. The hotel also offers amenities to guests, including a fitness center.
De L’Europe Amsterdam
Finally, De L’Europe Amsterdam is one of the top luxury hotels in Amsterdam. This five-star hotel on the Amstel River offers opulent guest rooms and a convenient location in the heart of the city.
