Travel Blog Post Ideas: How to Write 12 Blog Posts from One Trip
Are you a travel blogger wondering how to come up with travel blog post ideas? If so, keep reading because I am sharing simple and easy ideas for a dozen great blog posts you can write from just one trip!
As a travel blogger, it can be a challenge to come up with fresh content all the time. Even if you don’t travel frequently, there are ways you can turn one trip into many pieces of content for your blog.
Below, I’m talking about the 12 types of blog posts you can write about just one trip. Whether it’s a two-week trip to Italy, a one-week Caribbean cruise, or a long weekend in NYC, you can get at least a dozen blog posts out of it! This is a great way to work smarter, not harder when it comes to your travel blog.
Haven’t started a travel blog yet? Read my guide on how to start a travel blog here. This guide will show you the right way to start a blog, especially if you want to make money from blogging.
Now let’s get into the travel blog post ideas!
I recommend planning out the blog posts you want to write about a trip beforehand, so that you can get the photos you need and try everything you need to try in order to put together the blog post later.
I’ve also included links to my own blog posts to give you some real-life examples.
1. Packing List
The first type of blog post you can write about your trip is a packing list. What should people pack for a trip to Disney World? A Caribbean cruise? Paris in the spring? An African safari?
This is a great type of blog post for affiliate marketing because you can link to the items you mention on Amazon (or another website) and earn a commission when someone makes a purchase through your affiliate link. You can learn more about affiliate marketing on my guide on how to start a travel blog.
You can make your packing list stand out by tailoring it to a specific need; for example, what to pack for a destination during a certain season, or what to pack for a destination where people dress more conservatively. Think about questions people may have about what to pack, and answer them.
Or you can come at it from a unique angle like commonly forgotten things to pack for a particular destination. This is something I’ve personally done on my blog and it works really well!
Examples of this type of blog post:
- Disney World Essentials: 10 Things You Can’t Forget
- What to Pack for Iceland in Winter
- 15 Things to Pack for Your First Cruise
- What to Wear in Egypt for Women
2. Best Things to Do
Another type of blog post you can write is a guide to the best things to do in your destination. People are always researching this! This is a blog post that you can easily put a unique spin on too.
For example, you could just write a massive list of the best things to do, or you could put a twist on it (like the best things to do with kids, the best free things to do, the best things to do on a rainy day, etc.)
Or write from an unexpected angle — talk about the things not worth doing in your destination, or offbeat things to do, or things to do for people who have a particular hobby or interest, and so on.
Examples of this type of blog post:
- 21 Best Free Things to Do in Edinburgh, Scotland
- 25 Best Things to Do in Buenos Aires, Argentina
- 12 Best Things to Do in London (And 3 You Can Skip!)
- 10 Things to Do in Las Vegas That’s Not Gambling
3. Itinerary
Next up is the itinerary post! This is a type of blog post that is very helpful to other travelers who are planning a trip to the destination you visited and want to know exactly how to spend their time.
When writing this blog post, you can base it off the actual itinerary you followed on your trip, or think about what you would have done differently to enhance your trip and create the perfect itinerary from that.
You could also even write multiple blog posts about different itinerary lengths. Maybe you took a 7-day trip to Paris, but what would you recommend for someone who has just 3 days to spend in Paris?
Examples of this type of blog post:
- The Ultimate One Week in Italy Itinerary
- 3-Day Itinerary for Paris, France
- How to Spend a Weekend in New York City
- The Ultimate 3-Month Central America Backpacking Itinerary
4. Where to Stay
Another blog post you can write is a guide on where to stay in your destination. I have a huge focus of these types of blog posts on Stay to Wander (in fact, it was initially the whole focus of my blog!)
You’ve probably done a lot of research yourself on the best areas to stay and the best hotels in your destination, so why not share that knowledge with others to help them plan their trip?
This is another type of blog post that is really good for affiliate marketing. You can join hotel affiliate programs like Booking.com, Expedia, and Hotels.com through a platform like Stay22 or Travelpayouts, and then you will earn a commission every time someone books a hotel through an affiliate link on your blog.
You can round up the best luxury hotels, boutique hotels, cheap hotels, hostels, or even campsites in a destination. Or write a guide about the best areas or neighborhoods to stay in for a particular destination.
Examples of this type of blog post:
- Where to Stay in Lake Como Without a Car (5 Best Towns)
- 12 Best Boutique Hotels in London, England
- Where to Stay in Paris for Your First Time (Best Neighborhoods)
- 10 Best Budget-Friendly Hostels in Cusco, Peru
5. Foodie Guide
Another great type of blog post is a guide about where to eat in a destination.
There are so many ways you can approach this type of blog post. If you have a specific diet, such as vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free, you can definitely write about that to help other travelers!
You can also write about a specific type of food, like the best places for ramen or pizza or ice cream in a destination. Or a certain occasion (e.g. romantic restaurants for a date night) or a meal (like brunch.)
Examples of this type of blog post:
- 12 Best Food Tours in NYC (From a Local!)
- 20 Best Brunch Restaurants in Los Angeles, California
- Where to Eat Gluten-Free Food in Tokyo, Japan
- 12 Best Bakeries in Paris, France
6. Mistakes to Avoid
This is an interesting blog post but one that has worked really well for me!
If you know a destination very well, this is a great blog post to write. Or even after you visit a place for the first time, think back on what you would have done differently and share your advice with others!
This is a way you can share your own experiences with others in a way that is engaging and entertaining to read, and it also helps your readers prepare for a trip to a particular destination.
Examples of this type of blog post:
- 17 Common Mistakes to Avoid in Paris
- What NOT to Do in Italy
- 10 Things I Wish I Knew Before Traveling to Egypt
- Top 5 Mistakes to Avoid at Disney World
7. Best Day Trips
Another creative blog post idea is writing about day trips from a destination. I have a lot of these types of blog posts on Stay to Wander, and they tend to do really well for me along with hotel guides.
If you’ve taken a specific day trip yourself, you can write a detailed guide about how others can do it. Or you can create a larger round-up of the best day trips from a particular destination.
This is another good type of blog post for affiliate marketing. You can join an affiliate program for a tour website (such as Viator or GetYourGuide) and include affiliate links to day trips and tours your readers can book. Again, I recommend joining Stay22 or Travelpayouts to access these affiliate programs.
Examples of this type of blog post:
- 6 Best Day Trips from Rome, Italy
- How to Take a Day Trip to Versailles from Paris
- 10 Best Day Trips from London, England by Train
- Is a Day Trip to Chichen Itza from Cancun Worth It?
8. Photo Inspiration
Here’s a fun type of blog post to put together! If you love photography, you can help and inspire others by sharing a blog post with your best photos. These types of blog posts can do really well.
You can write a guide to the best photo-worthy spots and Instagrammable locations, or simply put together a post with your favorite photos to inspire someone else to visit this destination.
And you don’t need to be a professional photographer to put together this type of blog post either — even if you only take photos with your iPhone, don’t be shy about sharing them with others.
Examples of this type of blog post:
- 10 Best Eiffel Tower Photo Spots in Paris
- 20 Gorgeous Photos That Will Inspire You to Visit Guatemala
- 15 Instagrammable Locations in Venice, Italy
- 7 Best Views of the Brooklyn Bridge in NYC
9. How to Guide
Was there something in particular that you had questions about or had to figure out on your trip? If so, chances are other people feel the same way! You can write a how to guide that solves that problem.
This is especially helpful when it comes to transportation (getting from Point A to Point B) or specific processes (like buying a SIM card in another country) that people might have question about.
Examples of this type of blog post:
- How to Avoid Altitude Sickness in Peru
- How to Visit Nusa Penida from Bali
- How to Buy a SIM Card in Mexico
- How to Hike Between Towns in Cinque Terre, Italy
10. Travel Tips
Blog posts about travel tips have worked really well for me. This is a great way to share your advice and experiences in one place. You can write a broad list of tips for a destination, or get more specific.
For example, if you’ve done a particular activity (like hiking the Inca Trail) you can share tips about that. Or come at it from an angle of secret tips and hacks that most travelers don’t know about.
Examples of this type of blog post:
- How to Survive Disney World in the Summer
- 25 Travel Tips for Mexico to Know Before You Go
- 10 Tips for Hiking the Inca Trail in Peru
- 15 Essential Travel Tips for Your First Cruise
11. Seasonal Guide
Another good type of blog post to write is a seasonal guide. This can be focused on the best things to do in a certain destination during a specific time of year (such as winter, spring, summer, or fall) or a holiday.
You can also talk about tips for visiting during a certain time of year (like how to stay cool in Europe during the summer or the best tips for visiting European Christmas markets in the winter.)
Examples of this type of blog post:
- How to Visit the Dyker Heights Christmas Lights
- Where to See Cherry Blossoms in Japan in the Spring
- 10 Tips for Visiting Europe During the Summer
- The Best Places to See Fall Foliage in Vermont
12. Ultimate Guide
Finally, an ultimate guide is a great way to tie all your content together!
If you’ve already written several blog posts about a destination using some of the blog post ideas from above, then you can also link to them from your ultimate guide. For example, in an ultimate guide to Paris, you might have sections for where to stay, best things to do, where to eat, and so on.
You can fill in each section with several paragraphs of info, but then think link to your full blog post on that topic if readers want to learn more. This links all your content about one destination together.
Examples of this type of blog post:
- The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Paris, France
- The Ultimate Guide to Yellowstone National Park
- The Ultimate Guide to Solo Travel in Costa Rica
- The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Tuscany
