Where to Stay in Granada, Nicaragua
Are you wondering where to stay in Granada, Nicaragua?
Granada is a popular destination in Nicaragua that has a lot to offer to visitors. This colorful colonial town is a great place to base yourself for at least a few days while you are traveling through Nicaragua.
Here are the top things to do in and around Granada:
- Climb to the bell tower of two of the town’s historic churches, Immaculate Conception of Mary Cathedral Church and Church of the Mercy, for great views (each has admission of $1)
- Take a boat trip to the nearby Isletas de Granada at sunset
- Spend a chilled out day relaxing at one of the beach clubs on Laguna de Apoyo just 30 minutes away (you can book transportation and a day pass for $14 from Oasis Hostel in Granada)
- See glowing lava at Masaya Volcano on a nighttime tour
- Visit nearby Mombacho Volcano and hike in the cloud forest
- Attend the Treehouse Party on Friday night which happens at a treehouse in the middle of the jungle 20 minutes outside Granada (tickets are $37 and must be booked online in advance)
- Enjoy a bite to eat at a charming cafe like the Garden Cafe, Gaia Forest Cafe, or Cafe de Arte
As you can see, a lot of the best things to do here are actually outside Granada itself, but they town makes an excellent base for exploring all of the nearby destinations and activities for a few days.
Best Places to Stay in Granada
Granada is a fairly small city, with the historic center concentrated around Parque Central. Most of the hotels and hostels in Granada are located within a few blocks of Parque Central and its main square.
I personally stayed at Socialtel Granada. I hesitate to recommend this place to other travelers, though. It’s a great and convenient location (right on Parque Central with views of the cathedral) and some of the facilities are nice. There’s a swimming pool and plenty of comfortable lounge areas, including a big patio. I also appreciated the free filtered water was available so you could refill your water bottle any time.
I booked a private room and was offered a free upgrade to a “suite” which was unfortunately really bad. The room was super dirty, the air conditioning barely worked, and the wood around the window was rotted away, exposing huge gaps to the outside. This also meant the room had zero soundproofing, and being located on the second floor overlooking the main square, meant that it was incredibly noisy at night.
It was pretty disappointing overall. If you’re looking for a cheap hostel, there are much better options in Granada, and if you’re looking for a nice private room, there are also many better hotels in Granada.
Here are my top picks for where to stay in Granada:
- Best boutique hotel: Boutique Hotel Secret Garden Granada
- Best guest house: Casa Bubu Guest House
- Best on a budget: Oasis Hostel
