Where to Stay in Sofia, Bulgaria
Are you wondering where to stay in Sofia, Bulgaria? Read on for my top picks!
Sofia is a really cool capital city. I recently spent over a week in Sofia, and ended up liking it a lot. It’s a cosmopolitan city, but it also has a fun and laidback vibe. There’s an eclectic mixture of architecture, from beautiful old churches to Neoclassical gems to concrete Communist-era buildings.
Although Bulgaria as a whole was more expensive on my most recent trip in 2026 than when I went in 2021, it still offers good value for money. Sofia is much more affordable than Western European capitals.
How long should you spend in Sofia? I recommend spending at least two full days in Sofia, although you can easily stay for longer. I also recommend at least two extra days for taking day trips around Bulgaria. Sofia makes a great base for exploring more of the country, including places like Rila Monastery.
Sofia is a pretty walkable city, and I recommend staying as centrally as possible so you will be close to all the top tourist attractions and areas for dining and nightlife. Since I was visiting for over a week, I opted for an Airbnb rather than a hotel, close to the pedestrian-only thoroughfare of Vitosha Boulevard.
This was a great location, and I was less than a 15-minute walk to anywhere I wanted to go.
