I spent several nights in Riga as part of a trip through the Baltic countries. I started in Tallinn, Estonia and then made my way to Riga, Latvia by bus, and then I continued on to Vilnius, Lithuania by bus. These three countries combine wonderfully into one trip, especially if you have 10 to 14 days to spare.
Riga is a beautiful city located on the River Daugava, which empties into the Baltic Sea. It has a charming medieval Old Town, as well as a newer part that is filled with gorgeous Art Nouveau architecture.
I especially loved the beautiful parks that separate the Old Town from the city center.
How many days in Riga is enough? To fully experience Riga, I recommend spending two full days in the city. However, I would spend longer in Latvia overall, as there are some great day trips you can take such as Jurmala, a seaside resort town, Cesis, a charming town with a castle, or Bauska, which has a lovely palace.
Best Places to Stay in Riga
Riga is very walkable, so as long as you stay in the Old Town or the city center, you should have no trouble getting around. I personally stayed about five minutes from the Old Town and loved the area!
I stayed at the Grand Poet Hotel as a guest of the Latvia Travel and I absolutely loved this hotel. Although I received a complimentary stay as part of my trip, this is a hotel I would not hesitate to book for myself if I returned to Riga. It’s one of the top hotels in the city, and it’s in a really great location.
You can easily get to the Old Town, and it’s surrounded by gorgeous parks. The hotel offers some great amenities available to all guests like an indoor swimming pool, a hot tub, and a sauna.

Grand Poet Hotel
As I mentioned above, the Grand Poet Hotel is where I stayed in Riga and I would highly recommend it. This hotel was ideally located near the Old Town and had lots of great amenities. I appreciated that the wellness center with an indoor swimming pool, hot tub, and sauna was available at no extra charge.
The breakfast buffet, which was included with my stay, was also really good with tons of variety! The only thing I didn’t love about my particular room was that it had no view, with the window looking out onto a very small central courtyard. This made the room a bit dark without much good natural light.
However, I’d still recommend this hotel — just make sure you request a room with a view!
Metropole Hotel
Another great place to stay in Riga is the Metropole Hotel. It has the same ownership as the Grand Poet Hotel, but rooms here are typically a bit cheaper. This hotel is located right on the edge of the Old Town.
It’s very convenient to Riga Central Station where you can catch trains all around the country. It’s also easy to explore the Old Town and the rest of Riga from this elegant and comfortable hotel.
Grand Hotel Kempinski Riga
Another one of the best luxury hotels in the city is Grand Hotel Kempinski Riga. This opulent hotel is located right in the Old Town of Riga across from the Latvian National Opera and close to several parks.
It’s a great location for exploring the city, and you can also enjoy coming back to your luxurious room every night. Although it’s one of the pricier hotels in Riga, it’s worth the splurge because you’ll enjoy amenities like an indoor swimming pool, a spa, a fitness center, and a delicious included breakfast each morning.
Dome Hotel
For anyone who wants to stay in the middle of Riga’s historic Old Town, Dome Hotel is the perfect choice. This boutique hotel is situated in a 17th-century building in the midst of the Old Town.
The rooms at this hotel are unique and elegant, and the historical elements blend seamlessly with the modern, airy design. This hotel also has a spa with a sauna, as well as a lovely rooftop terrace.
Aparthotel Amella

Aston Hotel Riga
Another great place to stay is Aston Hotel Riga. This hotel is about a 12-minute walk from the Old Town, and it’s close to some of the beautiful parks in Riga’s city center, making it a very nice location.
Guests will appreciate the modern style and comforts of this hotel, which all come at a pretty affordable price point. The hotel also features amenities like a lovely rooftop terrace and a fitness center.
Hilton Garden Inn Riga Old Town
The Hilton Garden Inn Riga Old Town is an excellent place to stay if you’re looking for a clean and modern mid-range hotel. As the name suggests, it’s situated right in the heart of Riga’s Old Town.
This hotel is in one of Riga’s most famous squares, steps away from the 14th-century House of the Blackheads and the iconic St. Peter’s Church. Amenities for guests at this hotel include a fitness center.
Relais Le Chevalier

If you’re looking for a cheap hostel in Riga, Cinnamon Sally Backpackers Hostel is definitely the best choice. This affordable hostel is highly rated and has a good location right by Riga’s Old Town. It’s also located right across from Riga Central Station, where you can catch trains to destinations all around the country.
A big perk of staying at this hostel is that it includes free breakfast. There’s also a communal kitchen for guests to use. There are private rooms available, as well as dorm rooms with shared bathrooms.
