What is Baños known for? Baños is known as the adventure capital of Ecuador. Located about three hours from Quito, it’s worth spending a few days in this beautiful small town with so many activities to try.
Some of the can’t-miss activities in Baños include:
- Taking an open-air chiva bus tour along the spectacular Ruta de las Cascadas (Waterfall Route) or even biking the route if you’re feeling really adventurous
- Going ziplining, canyoning, or waterfall rappelling
- Booking a tour to the nearby Amazon (day trips and multi-day trips are available)
- Soaking in the natural hot springs that Baños is famous for
- Going to one of the many scenic viewpoints in the mountains above the city like the Casa del Árbol (home to the famous “Swing at the End of the World” photo op)
- Take an extreme whitewater rafting tour
- Do the easy hike to Pailón del Diablo, one of the most iconic waterfalls in Baños
Is Baños worth visiting for several days? Yes, absolutely! Some people try to do Baños on a day trip from Quito, but it’s a long trip, and you’ll only be able to visit a couple of places if you do this.
⏰ Short on time? This full-day tour from Quito covers the highlights of Baños.
How long should I stay in Baños? I would recommend spending three or four days in Baños if you want to do a lot of activities. You could really spend up to a week there though and not run out of things to do!

Best Luxury Hotels
Luna Volcán
If you’re looking to splurge in Baños, you can’t go wrong with Luna Volcán. This luxurious hotel is located in the mountains above Baños, so you will need your own car or have to rely on taxis to get into town, but it’s worth it for the spectacular setting of this secluded luxury hotel and spa.
I visited Luna Volcán on a day pass ($30 to use the pools and thermal baths) but I would definitely spend a couple of nights there in the future. While you’ll be paying a higher price to stay here, breakfast and dinner are included, the rooms are very luxurious, and you’ll have unrivaled views of the surrounding mountains.

Sangay Spa Hotel
For a more affordable luxury hotel that is located right in town, you can’t go wrong with Sangay Spa Hotel. This hotel is right in front of the Cascada de la Virgen, the beautiful main waterfall in town. It’s also just a couple of minutes away from the Termas de la Virgen, the local hot springs.
This hotel offers free breakfast during your stay. There’s also a swimming pool, a hot tub, a spa with many treatments available, a tennis court, and a football pitch for guests to enjoy.

Casa del Balcon is an amazing boutique mid-range hotel located in the heart of Baños. There are single rooms available for solo travelers, double rooms with a private terrace, and apartment-style rooms with a private kitchen and terrace. Best Budget Hotels
Selina Baños
For a good budget place to stay in Baños, I’d recommend the Selina with some caveats. I stayed at this Selina location, and after having stayed in a number of Selinas around Latin America, I was least impressed by this one. It was extremely noisy and did not feel as clean as I would have liked.
That being said, this is still a good option if you’re looking for an affordable private room or dorm and nice amenities like a coworking place, on-site restaurant and terrace, wellness room, and so on. It’s also in a really good location in the center of town, making it an ideal base for your stay in Baños.

Erupcion Art Hotel & Hostel
One of the best options if you’re on a tight budget is Erupcion Art Hotel & Hostel. I met a few people staying here and they all liked it. You can get a dorm bed for $10 a night and affordable private rooms too.
This hostel also has a rooftop bar and shared terrace where you can relax and meet other guests. If you’re looking for a cheap, social place to stay in Baños, then this is a good option.
