The ABC Islands consist of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao. These three islands are located in the Southern Caribbean, just north of Venezuela. All three islands are constituent countries of the Netherlands.

This means that the ABC Islands have significant Dutch influence and are technically part of the Netherlands, but there is also a lot of Caribbean influence. The most popular language spoken in the ABC Islands is Papiamento, a Portuguese Creole language that has also been influenced by Dutch and Spanish.

One reason the ABC Islands are popular is because they’re outside of the Caribbean’s hurricane zone. This means that you can visit Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao any time of year without worrying about hurricanes.

All three of the ABC Islands are beautiful Caribbean destinations, and it can be difficult to choose which one to visit. There’s no one “best” island. I’ve been to all three islands, so I’ll break them down for you below.

Aruba

Aruba is by far the most popular of the ABC Islands, with more than 2 million visitors per year. It’s the smallest of the three islands, and it’s the most developed. In particular, the western side of the island is very built up, including the capital Oranjestad and the resort areas of Eagle Beach and Palm Beach.

You’ll find tons of resorts, hotels, commercial zones, American chain restaurants, and so on. Getting to Aruba is also very easy with nonstop flights from more than a dozen cities in the United States.

Aruba is a good choice for you if you’re looking for a relaxing, easy Caribbean vacation. There are resorts and hotels for every budget, including plenty of all-inclusive options. Aruba has a robust tourism infrastructure so it’s also easy to book tours and activities around the island.

If you’re looking for a destination where you can party and enjoy nightlife, Aruba is for you. On the other hand, it’s also a good choice for families. There’s really something for everyone in Aruba.

However, it can be harder to experience the authentic local culture because of how touristy it is.

Bonaire

Next up we have Bonaire. Bonaire is by far the least developed of the ABC Islands, making it a great choice for travelers who want to get off the beaten path more and experience nature.

You won’t find any high-rise hotels or sprawling mega-resorts here. There are also only a handful of nonstop flights from US cities to Bonaire, making it a little more challenging to get there.

However, it’s definitely worth the effort to visit. Bonaire is known for its amazing scuba diving and snorkeling, and there are lots of great shore dives you can do. The island also has some beautiful beaches.

This is definitely the ideal destination for adventurous travelers who are looking for something a little different than your typical Caribbean resort vacation. It’s a quiet island untouched by mass tourism (so far.)

Curacao

Finally, we have Curacao. Curacao is the largest of the ABC Islands, and it has a great mixture of nature, culture, and things to do. Curacao is considered to have the best beaches out of all three islands.

Although it’s not quite as lively as Aruba, the capital Willemstad does have some entertainment and nightlife. It’s also a great cultural destination and has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You’ll find a good selection of hotels and resorts around the island. However, it’s not quite as built-up and touristy as Aruba, which can make Curacao a happy medium between Aruba and Bonaire. This is a great destination for couples, families, or groups of friends, and there are options for every budget.

Curacao is growing in popularity with tourists, with more than 1.3 million visitors per year. There are currently nonstop flights from around half a dozen cities in the United States to Curacao.

Visiting All Three Islands on a Cruise

Can’t decide on one island to visit? You could always visit all of them!

One way you can visit all three ABC Islands is on a cruise. There are many cruises that visit all three islands, primarily cruises departing from Florida (Port Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami) and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Some cruises include stops in other Southern Caribbean destinations too.

Almost all the major cruise lines (Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, NCL, Carnival, etc.) offer cruises that stop in the ABC Islands. This is a great way to get a taste of each island without having to pick just one.

You’ll only have one day on each of the ABC Islands, but it’s enough time to give you a feel for each destination and experience beaches and other activities. Cruises are also an easy, hassle-free way to travel in the Caribbean since you don’t have to worry about any of the logistics yourself.

Inter-island flights are also costly and limited, which makes cruising to best way to get between the islands if you want to visit all three of them. It can also work out to be cheaper to take a week-long cruise than to plan a week-long resort vacation to one of the ABC Islands, so definitely consider this option!
