Best Hotels Near Tikal, Guatemala
Are you looking for the best hotels near Tikal, Guatemala?
Here’s your ultimate guide on where to stay in order to visit Tikal!
Tikal National Park is one of the coolest destinations in Guatemala. Located in the northern part of the country, Tikal is home to some of the most impressive ruins in the Mayan world.
From 200 to 900 AD, Tikal was one of the most important cities in Mayan civilization. After its mysterious decline, the once-grand city was reclaimed by the jungle for nearly one thousand years.
After being excavated, the archaeological site opened as a national park.
Tikal is one of Guatemala’s most impressive sites, and it’s a must-visit on any itinerary. Although you can see the highlights of the national park in one day, I recommend spending two full days there.
When it comes to where to stay near Tikal, you have two options: Flores and Tikal.
Staying in Flores or Tikal
Flores is the largest town near Tikal National Park, which makes it a popular base for exploring the ruins. It’s about a 1.5-hour drive from Flores to Tikal. In addition to its proximity to Tikal, Flores is a destination in its own right. This charming town located on Lake Petén Itzá is a great place to spend a couple of days.
To get to Flores, you can either take an overnight bus from Guatemala City or take a short 1-hour flight, which is what I did. The bus is more economical, but the flight is obviously much faster!
You can also stay in Tikal itself. There are three hotels and a campsite inside the national park. However, there is nothing else around at all, because you’re literally in the middle of the jungle.
My recommendation is to spend two nights in Flores and two nights in Tikal.
This way, you can explore the town (which you really shouldn’t miss) and have two days to fully explore the national park (which is a good amount of time, because it’s huge and you don’t want to rush!)
Where to Stay Near Tikal
I personally spent two nights in Flores followed by two nights in Tikal, and I thought this was the perfect combination for this trip. The two hotels I stayed at were sister hotels, so they offered a free private shuttle between Flores and Tikal, which was extremely convenient and cut down on costs.
Here are my top picks for where to stay near Tikal:
- Best in Flores: Hotel Isla de Flores
- Best in Tikal National Park: Jungle Lodge Hotel

Hotel Isla de Flores
This is the hotel I stayed at in Flores, and I would highly recommend it. Hotel Isla de Flores is a stylish, comfortable boutique hotel that is centrally located in the charming town of Flores. The rooms were great and the hotel has a nice rooftop pool. They can also arrange tours for you, like a boat ride on the lake.
And as I mentioned, Hotel Isla de Flores has a sister property inside Tikal National Park, the Jungle Lodge Hotel. If you stay there, you can take their free private shuttle from Flores to Tikal and then back.

Hotel Casona de La Isla
Another one of the best hotels in Flores is Casona de La Isla. This waterfront hotel offers rooms with views of the lake, pool, or courtyard. There’s a pool for guests and free included breakfast every morning.
Additionally, this hotel can organize tours around Lake Petén Itzá or to Tikal.

Los Amigos Hostel
Although I did not stay at Los Amigos Hostel myself, I know plenty of people who did and everyone really enjoyed their stay and had fun there. This is by far the best and most popular hostel in Flores.
If you’re looking for a budget-friendly accommodation with a social backpacker vibe, this is the top place to stay. They also offer affordable tours to Tikal and other nearby ruins and destinations.

Hotel Villa Maya
Hotel Villa Maya is one of the top-rated hotels in Flores. Unlike the other hotels on this list, it isn’t located on the island part of Flores that is directly in the lake. It’s actually a little bit outside town.
But this hotel receives great reviews and is located on a gorgeous tropical estate with nice rooms, a swimming pool, and an on-site restaurant. It’s also only 45 minutes away from Tikal National Park.

Jungle Lodge Hotel
Jungle Lodge Hotel is located inside Tikal National Park and is one of the coolest places I stayed in my 2.5 months traveling around Guatemala. Staying here is one of the best ways to experience Tikal, because you can visit it early in the morning and at sunset when there are no other tourists around.
That’s why I recommend spending two nights in Flores and two nights in Tikal. Since Jungle Lodge is a sister property to Hotel Isla de Flores, you can take advantage of their free shuttle if you stay there too.
I loved this hotel, which is a short 10-minute walk to the ruins of Tikal. The property has a swimming pool and an on-site restaurant. Its location is so unique because you’re really in the middle of the jungle and you will wake up to the sounds of howler monkeys in the middle of the night.

Hotel Tikal Inn
The next best place to stay that’s located inside Tikal National Park is Hotel Tikal Inn. Although it’s a bit longer of a walk, it’s still close to the entrance of the national park and all the ruins. The rooms are also a lot more basic than Jungle Lodge, although this hotel still receives good reviews from guests.
This hotel offers a swimming pool, an on-site restaurant, and tours to Tikal.

Hotel Jaguar Inn
The third hotel located inside Tikal National Park is Hotel Jaguar Inn. While it’s comparable in price and amenities to Hotel Tikal Inn, it unfortunately doesn’t receive as good of reviews from guests.
Between the two, I would choose Hotel Tikal Inn if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly hotel inside the national park, although Hotel Jaguar Inn is a decent alternative if it’s not available.
