Where to Stay in Delhi, India
Are you wondering where to stay in Delhi, India as a tourist?
This guide will show you the best areas and best hotels for visitors to India’s bustling capital city! Delhi is a popular destination in India, as the country’s largest city. Many travelers begin their trips to India in Delhi, especially if they are visiting the Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur.)
There are so many incredible things to do in Delhi, with some of the highlights being:
- Qutb Minar, a historic minaret dating back to the 13th century
- Humayun’s Tomb, a grand tomb from the 16th century
- Jama Masjid, the most important mosque of the Mughal empire
- Lotus Temple, a beautiful house of worship for the Bahai faith
- Old Delhi, a maze of narrow alleys and vibrant markets
- Red Fort, a historic Mughal fort dating back to the 17th century
There’s a lot to do in Delhi, but it’s also a sprawling city with over 11 million people. Many of the top things to do in Delhi are spread out across the city, and traffic can be terrible. So it’s important to choose the right area to stay in to minimize how much time you have to spend in transit while visiting Delhi.
It’s not a walkable city at all, and to get around, most visitors opt for taxis/Ubers (which are very affordable) or book private tours that include a driver for the day (which is also quite affordable here.)
Which Part of Delhi Is Best to Stay In?
When it comes to where to stay in Delhi, my top recommendation would be around Connaught Place in New Delhi. This is a very central area with easy access to many of the city’s top tourist attractions.
You’ll find a lot of upscale hotels here, as well as government buildings and embassies, giving it an international feel. I stayed in a couple of different places while in Delhi, but the best hotel I stayed at was Le Meridien New Delhi. It’s a five-star hotel located in this area that offers pretty good value for money.
I wasn’t totally blown away by this hotel (the rooms felt bland and it didn’t have a ton of charm overall), but as far as five-star hotels go in this area, it’s one of the most affordable options.
Another good area to stay in is South Delhi, near Lodhi Garden and Delhi Golf Club. You’ll find more nice hotels here, and you’re still not too far of a drive from most of Delhi’s main tourist attractions.
I would not recommend staying near the airport unless you’re prepared to spend a lot more time sitting in a car to get anywhere. I also would be hesitant to recommend Old Delhi. It’s a cool area you should definitely visit, but it can be a bit chaotic to stay there, and there aren’t as many good hotel options.

Taj Mahal, New Delhi
If you’re looking for a great five-star hotel, one of the best places to stay is the Taj Mahal, New Delhi. This luxurious hotel offers excellent value for money and a very central location in New Delhi.
It provides a peaceful respite away from the hustle and bustle of the city, with amenities like an outdoor swimming pool, a spa, and a fitness center. A free buffet breakfast is also included with your stay.
The Imperial, New Delhi
One of the most iconic luxury hotels in the city is The Imperial, New Delhi. Built in 1931, this historic hotel near Connaught Place is perfectly positioned for exploring all that Delhi has to offer.
While I did not personally stay at this hotel, I came to dinner here and was very impressed by the property. It has an elegant style, and offers amenities like an outdoor swimming pool, a spa, and a fitness center.
Le Meridien New Delhi
As I mentioned above, Le Meridien New Delhi is where I stayed. Although it’s a five-star hotel, I felt like the rooms were very boring and basic. However, that is my only real complaint with this hotel.
It offered good value for money and had an excellent location for exploring Delhi. I also enjoyed the buffet breakfast at this hotel. There’s also a nice spa and an outdoor swimming pool for guests to enjoy.
The Claridges New Delhi
The Claridges New Delhi is a lovely historic property dating back to the 1950s. It has an old-fashioned sort of charm to it, with elegant guest rooms and beautiful gardens that are an oasis in the midst of the city.
This hotel has a convenient location for getting to Delhi’s top tourist attractions, making it an ideal base for your trip. There are also nice amenities here, like an outdoor swimming pool and a spa.
The Lodhi
The Lodhi is a chic luxury hotel located near Delhi Golf Club and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Humayun’s Tomb. This stylish property is the perfect place to stay if you’re looking for amenities.
There’s an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, squash courts, a fitness center, a spin room, and a spa. If you really want to splurge, you can even book a suite with your own private plunge pool.
The Oberoi New Delhi
The Oberoi New Delhi is another excellent five-star hotel in a great location. You’ll feel a world away from the chaos of the city at this hotel, situated between Delhi Golf Club and Humayun’s Tomb.
The rooms here offer expansive views of greenery all around, but you’re still only a short drive from Delhi’s top tourist attractions. Guests staying here will enjoy two swimming pools, a fitness center, and a spa.
Haveli Dharampura
Haveli Dharampura is a great place to stay if you are looking for a unique, high-end, character-filled stay. Unlike the other hotels on this list, Haveli Dharampura is located in the heart of Old Delhi.
Situated in a historic building dating back to 1887, this boutique hotel offers sumptuous rooms with incredible decor. There’s also a rooftop terrace overlooking Old Delhi, and free breakfast is included.
The Leela Palace New Delhi
Finally, one of the best places to stay in the city is The Leela Palace New Delhi. This five-star hotel is a little less central than some of the other New Delhi hotels, but it does put you closer to the airport.
Guests staying here will enjoy amenities like a rooftop swimming pool, an indoor swimming pool, and a massive spa. The rooms are tastefully appointed, making this a true luxury oasis in Delhi.
