Where to Stay in Quito, Ecuador
Are you wondering where to stay in Quito, Ecuador?
I just spent a full week in Ecuador’s capital city and wrote this guide to help you choose the perfect place to stay on your visit to Quito. Quito is a big city with over two million people. In addition to having a large population, it’s also sprawling in area, covering more than 143 square miles.
So it’s especially important that you choose the right place to stay in Quito!
There are so many great things to do in Quito. Some of my favorites include:
- Visit the Basílica del Voto Nacional, a massive Neo-Gothic church where you can climb to the top of the towers for some truly incredible views over the city
- See the Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús, a church with an impressive all-gold interior
- Take a food and cultural walking tour to learn more about Quito
- Ride the Teleférico cable car up the Pichincha Volcano for amazing views of Quito from 13,000 feet
- Visit the beautiful Convento de San Francisco, a historic convent with a museum, gardens, and a tower that you can climb for more breathtaking city views
- Take a day trip to the cloud forest of Mindo for ziplining, waterfall hikes, and more
- Or take a day trip to the stunning Quilotoa Lagoon
- Be awed by Cotopaxi Volcano on a day trip from Quito
How many days do you need in Quito, Ecuador? I spent a full week in Quito, but you don’t need that much time. I’d recommend at least two full days to see the main sights. You can stay for longer if you want to base yourself in Quito and take day trips to some nearby destinations like I did.
Best Places to Stay in Quito, Ecuador
What part of Quito is the best to stay? As I mentioned, Quito is a LARGE city. But luckily, getting around is very cheap. The public buses cost just $0.25 and Ubers cost $2 to $5 to get across the city.
The most popular areas to stay in Quito are Centro Histórico, Mariscal, La Floresta, and La Carolina.
I stayed in Mariscal, which is known for its nightlife. It’s about two miles north of the historic center. La Floresta is adjacent to Mariscal, and it’s known for being a trendy and artistic neighborhood. La Carolina is a modern, family-friendly neighborhood even further north that is close to the sprawling Carolina Park.
What are the safest neighborhoods to stay in Quito? All of the above neighborhoods are safe for tourists. However, take extra care to be vigilant of pickpockets in the Centro Histórico. You also shouldn’t walk around alone late at night. Basically, just exercise common sense and you’ll be fine.
For me, the BEST place to stay in Quito would be the Centro Histórico. While I thought the neighborhood of Mariscal was fine, I wasn’t interested in the nightlife which is the main draw. However, I found myself going to the Centro Histórico because there was so much to do there and I loved the atmosphere!
